Kattencafe Kopjes: Let’s Have Cappuccino and Pet Some Cats

Categories: Fun,Latest News

There’s good news for cat lovers: in the Marco Polostraat a rather peculiar café recently opened. A sort of cat paradise if you will. And in a certain way it is, because the eight cats owning it (if you have a cat, you know what I mean) were adopted from two shelters: the Stichting Dierenleed in Amsterdam Noord and the Dierenopvangcentrum Amsterdam.

Kattencafe Kopjes is clearly a café with lots of cats inside. The concept is not entirely new. According to Kopjes cat cafés originated in Taiwan almost twenty years ago and became extremely popular in Japan. Trends travel fast and soon feline meccas opened also in London, Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen and New York.

Amsterdam being the hip avant-garde city that it is, was ready for the pussy cat cafe. Following a crowdfunding campaign launched by the owner Lenny Popelier last summer, which raised some 33 000 euros from hundreds of supporters, Amsterdam now finally has a place where you can buy a cappuccino surrounded by furry friends.

Note: entrance is 3€ for a two hour tour among felines, sweets and cakes. The fee is needed to keep the animals healthy and in good shape. The menu is charming as is the concept of an Amsterdam cat café, but remember to make a reservation because the place is jam packed. Oh yeah, one more thing: no dogs allowed, obviously.
