GroenLinks-PvdA Calls For Dutch Petrol Price Limits

Categories: Culture,Latest News,News from the Netherlands

GroenLinks-PvdA is calling for maximum Dutch petrol and diesel price, so that the government can establish a ceiling similar to the Belgian approach to help with the cost of living.

Party leader Jesse Klaver stated that this design is intended to help motorists cope with higher energy and Dutch petrol prices. Fuel prices in the Netherlands have risen faster than in Belgium, so Dutch drivers should not have to bear the brunt of the Middle East conflicts.

The Belgian Advantage

The maximum fuel prices that Belgium implemented after the 1970s oil crisis are scary ghosts to OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries), of course. Gas and Dutch petrol prices are always set by the Big Three oil companies in the Netherlands, whereas prices in Belgium are set by the government. At present, the maximum deduction is 70 cents per liter, which is a concern for Dutch drivers.

Other EU countries, such as Slovenia and Luxembourg, also have a fuel price ceiling, while Greece and Hungary temporarily placed one from the beginning of this month to counteract the Iranian conflict.

The Pushback

The Dutch central bank has rated the potential effects of rising gasoline prices as amber or dark amber, but it is against generic measures to keep energy more accessible in the future. Olaf Sleijpen, the central bank’s head, said he can understand that people are talking about providing some sort of compensation for the rising Dutch petrol prices, while presenting its annual report on Tuesday.

“But at the same time, I think it sensible to wait what the impact will be on households before deciding to go for compensation.”

“To say that cutting 10 cents from taxes on fuel will placate people, that’s not the case… People like me don’t need this relief. Therefore, if it is necessary to cut such costs, whatever relief you decide upon should be for the lower class.”

He also said, “Cutting fuel taxes by 10 cents is not going to make people happy. And people like me don’t need it. If you do plan to cut bills, then make sure the help reaches those who really need it.”

Who Should Actually Pay?

Klaver also stated his disapproval of a tax cut, claiming that, in reality, it would pass the burden of Dutch petrol prices on to everyone else, saying that we cannot allow taxpayers to pay for dumping down prices, and that the profits for the oil companies should be reduced rather than made up for by the taxpayers.

What This Means For Expats

The ongoing political debate matters to people who use their vehicles for school transportation or only drive their cars on weekends. Your monthly transportation expenses will become more predictable through the implementation of a price cap. You could choose a weekend getaway destination near the Belgian border, but as yet, the government has not yet reached a final decision on the Dutch petrol price proposal.
