Dutch “Chat Checkouts” and the Fight Against Loneliness

In a world that’s always rushing, the Netherlands has quietly made space for slowness… at the supermarket checkout. Dutch grocery chain Jumbo introduced Kletskassa, or “chat checkouts.” These special lanes are designed for customers who aren’t in a hurry and would be happy to have a conversation with the cashier. No rushing, no awkward pressure from the line behind you, just a moment of genuine human interaction during your weekly shop.

The Dutch Lonleiness epidemic

The idea was launched in 2019 as a pilot project to help address loneliness, particularly among older residents. It’s a real issue in the Netherlands. Just over half (51%) of people aged 75 and over report feeling lonely, and for many, grocery shopping is one of the few regular opportunities for face-to-face contact. Rather than treating that as incidental, Jumbo chose to design around it.

At a Kletskassa, everything works as usual. Groceries are scanned, payment is made, but the rhythm is different. Cashiers are trained to engage in conversation, ask how someone’s day is going, and allow interactions to unfold naturally. The “chat checkout” lanes are clearly marked, so shoppers in a hurry can still choose a faster checkout without frustration.

What makes the initiative stand out is that it isn’t framed as charity or nostalgia. It’s infrastructure. By 2023, Jumbo committed to rolling out chat checkouts across all its Dutch stores, turning a small social experiment into a permanent feature of everyday life.
