bunq organizes unique Hackathon

Build your own apps and directly link them to your bunq account

After the overwhelming success of the first Hackathon, the European challenger bank organizes a second edition on March 22, 2019. What makes this Hackathon unique is that the bank allows contestants to develop their own apps using the bunq platform. Unlike regular Hackathons, bunq doesn’t let contestants solve problems. Instead, developers are given the opportunity to develop their own ideas, which can be linked directly to their bunq account.

This way contestants get the freedom to build a completely new money experience. Instead of an endless reel of demos and presentations they can build a working app in 24 hours. These apps can be used by bunq users immediately.

The bunq Hackathons are the next step for bunq as forerunner on the European payment norm PSD2. bunq preceded this step by being the first bank to launch its public API and introducing OAuth as a safety measure. “Programmers can bring about a change to the banking industry more than anyone,” CEO and founder Ali Niknam said in a Tweakers interview earlier this month.

bunq itself regularly introduces innovations by integrating with third parties. For example, bunq en Informer launched a world’s first by releasing bank transactions in realtime for direct integration into your bookkeeping.

After the 24 hour Hackathon, over 100 contestants will present their newly developed applications at bunq’s headquarters in Amsterdam Sloterdijk. The winner, along with all developed applications, will be shared on bunq’s own channels after the Hackathon. Additionally, the winners will take home €2500,-.
