Act for Democracy! Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 31 May – 3 June, 2018

Recreating the future of Europe through art and culture

At a time when the future of Europe seems more open than ever, artists and thinkers from all over the world come together in Amsterdam for the Forum on European Culture. During a 4-day programme combining theater, performances, film, debate, music and expositions, they exchange ideas about Europe and imagine a shared European future. The theme of the second edition of the Forum is: ‘Act for Democracy!’ The Forum will take place from 31 May to 3 June, 2018 on various locations in Amsterdam. With, among others, Alessandro Baricco, Rem Koolhaas, Wolfgang Tillmans, Asli Erdoğan, and Srecko Horvat.

About the Forum on European Culture

Forum on European Culture is a biennial forum on the strength, impact and value of art and culture for Europe. The Forum is an initiative of DutchCulture and De Balie. The 2018 Forum on European Culture, this year entitled ‘Act for Democracy!’, is curated by Yoeri Albrecht (director De Balie) and Cees de Graaff (director DutchCulture). Freedom Lecture: Belarus Free Theatre

The exiled artistic directors of the courageous Belarus Free Theatre, an underground theatre that operates under the last dictatorship in Europe, will give the 23rd Freedom Lecture. Together with the exiled Turkish writer Asli Erdoğan and the Hungarian artistic activist Márton Gulyás they will discuss the importance of artistic and democratic freedom in Europe.

Sign of the Times 4 – The Struggle for Identity

World-famous director Ivo van Hove presents a unique theatre performance on the most important socio-political issue in today’s society: identity. With a lecture from political scientist Mark Lilla, who wrote the controversial book The Once and Future Liberal: after identity politics (2017).

Faith in Europe: Is Europe losing its soul?

In collaboration with Nederlands Kamerkoor and writers Kader Abdolah, Stefan Hertmans and Vonne van der Meer we dive into Europe’s history in search of its Christian, pan-religious or Enlightenment roots. With music from Nederlands Kamerkoor’s spectacular project 150 Psalms.
